“I love animals and it makes me happy to heal and care for them. Science is amazing, the body is amazing, and to be able to study and care for it brings me joy. I enjoy helping people by caring for their pets.” Dr. Jewel Hicks, D.V.M.
Dr. Jewel knew that she wanted to become a veterinarian at age 4 when she wanted to own every animal she could get her hands on. She has been obsessed with horses since she could remember and began riding horses when she was only 6 years old and hopes to be able to ride more in the future. She has owned rabbits, hamsters, snakes, birds, hermit crabs, cats, dogs, and horses.
She absolutely LOVES surgery! She states that it’s crazy that you can cut something open and sew it back together and it will heal! She also enjoys internal medicine and has a special interest in cardiology! She has been a member of LVMA and AVMA for three years now.
Dr. Jewel’s passions lie in General Medicine and Surgery. She had plans to be an equine veterinarian but during vet school, she realized that her passion lies with small animal medicine (dogs and cats).
Dr. Jewel graduated from Louisiana State University-School of Veterinary Medicine with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Pre-Veterinary, Animal Science, and Equine Science from McNeese State University, Dr. Jewel received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from LSU-SVM. Upon graduating in 2017 (alongside Dr. Jennifer Smith) she has worked for University Animal Clinic for 9 years (6 years as an assistant and 3 years as a veterinarian.) She was also a full-time assistant working overnights at the Pet Emergency Clinic in Lake Charles for 1 year prior to veterinary school.
When Dr. Jewel isn’t treating her patients, she can be found spending time with her husband and his two children and also their families. (They just got married in March!). She loves to read, watch movies and TV, ride horses, do photography, and gardening. Her favorite place to travel to is the beach. They have three cats, three dogs, and a horse. She absolutely LOVES Harry Potter!!!! She is a big nerd. She is always eager to learn new things! She never wants to quit learning!
Her father passed away from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2012 at the age of 59. She was only 23 when he died. She raised over $1000.00 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s that year and hopes to continue to support the cause. Her daddy was her best friend and she misses him deeply, and losing him had a profound impact on her life. “I promised him that I would go to Vet School and make my dreams come true, and that is exactly what I did," she said.
“I hope to further my knowledge of internal medicine and surgery while working at Animal Medical Center," said Dr. Jewel Hicks, DVM. "Practicing veterinary medicine is a passion that I have had since I was a little girl. I hope to provide my future patients and clients with exceptional veterinary care and I promise to always give it my all."
